The gondola is a traditional flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat that was the chief means of transportation in Venice, Italy for centuries. There were an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 gondolas in use during the 17th-18th centuries. Today there are 400-500 and they are used primarily as rides for paying tourists. I think I photographed all of them!
